Over the past few weeks, my partner and I have been working hard on assignments for the production of our film opening. We have completed both a character list, a prop list, and a production calendar for the opening scene. While busy with those assignment, I realized I have not yet blogged about a very important thing, that being the attention economy.
One of the key concepts that I have most recently learned about is the attention economy. One of the assignments that I needed to complete was analyzing my own media scape. I created a PowerPoint presentation that featured a media journal of every piece of media that I consumed on the Sunday that proceeded that week. There, I discussed what media scape that I categorize myself to be in, which was pop culture. I also discussed the attention economy, which is essentially different companies competing for the limited attention of the consumers, to put it simply. To showcase the effects and benefits of the attention economy, and how companies manipulate it, I did a rundown of the Nintendo Co., Ltd, often referred to as just Nintendo, and its many subsequent studios and purchases, explaining how they benefit from those acquisitions and divisions.
The attention economy is going to be a key factor when we construct our film pitch. In order to make our film look as marketable and presentable as possible to larger studios and corporations, we need to be able to compete in the attention economy. By understanding what gets people's attention more than what is likely to turn them off, we can market our film in a way that appeals to the most people. We can keep our target audience in mind, making ads and visual styles that they are likely to enjoy. We can craft a story that people will want to see, and we will distribute the film in the way that is most flexible to be watched. The attention economy is going to help shape nearly half of our entire pitch, so having a better understanding of it and grasping its core ideals and factors is going to be very beneficial to our film's production.
