Cracking My First Case: Learning about Case Studies

Last week in my Media Studies classes, I was taught about case studies. I learned about the components that make them up and the instructions that I will need to follow to complete my first case study, which is due on Friday, the 16th. The first step was the pick either a film company or a magazine company for the case study. Since I like to think of myself as a big film enthusiast, and I am doing a film opening for my final project, I chose to do a case study on a movie. The production company I chose to study was The Walt Disney Company, and I will deeply research the company's patterns of production and distribution, specifically in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic's effect on their movies and how the Disney+ streaming service helped to widely release the films I will discussing. Speaking of the films, that is the second step: choosing what movies I will be analyzing for this case study. I decided to use both the Pixar animated film 'Onward' and live action remake of 'Mulan.' I chose these two movies because they were both affected by the COVID-19 virus, as well as being distributed on Disney+. I will research the production process of these movies, the impact they had on the world, how they were marketed, their diversity and convergence, and how they were distributed. Step 3 is just myself actually compiling the case study, which will include much of the research of the company, Disney, and the two movies I chose in regards to the previously mentioned areas. This task is honestly a bit overwhelming, but I am sure that if I put in the time and effort that a project like this requires then I will be successful.

Aside from my first case study, my group partner, who is actually my brother, discussed a little about the film opening that we are going to shoot. We went over several genres, debating which one would be the best one we could convey with our opening. We pondered the idea of action, adventure, and comedy, though we finally settled on drama as our genre. We chose this because we really appreciate narrative with great character work and interactions, and because it should not be too outlandish to film. This is why I chose Onward and Mulan for my first case study, since both films incorporate elements that a drama has. I hope to continue to inquire about our final opening more in future posts.
