Annotation for Denotation and Connotation

This last week, my class and I learned about denotation and connotation. They both utilize signs, but they do so in different ways. Denotation is when a sign signifies the direct meaning of something. The sign, whether verbal or visual, distinctly represents the thing that is being signified. On the other hand, connotation is a more indirect link, where the sign signifies an implied meaning or interpretation of something, also whether it be verbal or visual. Connotations link things through repeated associations, whereas denotations are more straight forward signs. Both of these techniques are helpful to analyzing and understanding texts and images.

In addition to learning about denotation and connotation, I continued my progress on my case study throughout the last week and the weekend. As previously mentioned, I chose to analyze Disney, with the two films I am studying in depth being Onward and Mulan (2020). I have done the majority of my research for both the overview and the individual case studies, and I have started the process of plugging all of that information in to the actual site. I will continue to update this site until I have finalized this case study, and I plan to be finished before Thursday, October 19th, 2020. I will attach the link to the case study to this blog and hope to provide more information later this week.
