The 1st quarter of my AS level AICE Media Studies Course is about to end, and the dawn of the 2nd quarter of my 10th grade school year is drawing nearer. My course has discussed an abundance of different aspects of Media Studies, some of which were elaborations of my previous knowledge, while others were completely new concepts to me. For this entry, I will look back at everything I have learned in the first quarter, a retrospective of my time in the class thus far, as well as my expectations for the next quarter.
Throughout the first quarter, I learned about many techniques about both the studies and analyzation of the media, specifically in magazines and films, and the coursework that I will complete for my final grade at the end of the year. I learned about semiotics and the decoding of signs, connotation and denotation, and representation, along with many other aspects of media. I learned about film making techniques such as storyboarding, something I only heard about in the past. Now I know how to storyboard and find it rather enjoyable. I also learned a lot about the film industry through working on my case study, providing me with helpful insights on how some companies will market and distribute their films. Additionally, I learned about what the final grade will be for this class is, with coursework being accumulated throughout my time taking this class and being posted on this very blog.
In the next quarter, I hope to further learn about the analyzation of films. I hope to apply the knowledge that I have amassed during the first quarter and apply it to certain films. I would love to study how representation or narrative elements contribute to an overall film, and I would love to learn how the different elements of the film-making process converge to create a finished film. I would also like to learn more about other techniques to study films, such as the 9 frame analysis that was mentioned in a past class. Overall, I am very excited for my continued involvement in this AICE Media Studies class as I expand upon the knowledge I have already learned in the next three quarters.
